Everyone’s an expert. Including me.
LinkedIn has always been a space where you’re either hunting or being hunted. Years ago, it was recruiters. Now, it’s experts.
Lately, my inbox has been full of people offering to help me “grow” the PM Squad. Consultants, strategists, hustle-types, all very confident that they know exactly what I should be doing next.
And honestly? I don’t know who to trust.
That’s not shade. It’s just the weird reality of building something in public. Everyone sounds like an expert. Everyone has a playbook, a course, and a list of testimonials that could or could not have been written by AI.
And the uncomfortable truth is that I’m technically in that category too (minus the AI thing). I give advice. I help people figure things out. And I'm always hunting for business. It just so happens I'd rather starve than spam. Either way, when I say I don’t know who to trust, there’s a little self-awareness baked in.
The fun part about all of these inquiries that tell me I'm 90 days from making my first million is that I’m still very much in startup mode. I am not funded. There are no big checks coming in (things are slow). I am not receiving any outside funding (though I may be open to that, if you're looking to invest in ~all this~). The bottom line is: I have zero room to casually gamble on marketing experiments that might or might not work. So, no dice, experts.
So, how am I doing this. Well, it's not perfect and I need help. But, I’ve been learning a bit about advertising on LinkedIn, and it's interesting. Investing in ads can be a great way to find leads! But when ads start costing $70+ per lead, with no guarantee the person is real or interested, that’s a risk I can’t take. ("Sorry, kids, no dinner this month. Dad took a gamble on online advertising and lost.")
So instead, I’m doing what I can do to get the word out about the PM Squad, and my coaching and consulting services. I'm making videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. I'm writing EVEN MORE in my own voice, about the parts of PM that are real and interesting, and seem to connect with the real ones (hey! that's you, if you made it this far). I'm getting on podcasts, submitting articles, giving free keynotes, and taking every opportunity to talk openly about the work and why the PM Squad exists at all.
That means that I'm taking calls with folks who are interested. If you are, reach out. I'd love to chat.
Oh, and here's the fun part: The first month of PM Squad signups has been genuinely encouraging. I feel like we're on to something. But even better, I’ve been doing calls with new members to get early feedback. Those conversations have been great. Far more useful than most of the advice sitting in my LinkedIn inbox right now.
Now I’m trying to figure out how to amplify what’s working without losing the plot.
If this resonates, check out the PM Squad. If you’re a member, join the AMA tomorrow. If you want to connect, reach out. If you know a PM or a business owner who could use my help, please tell them about me. And if you’ve got smart, sustainable ideas for growing something like this without lighting money on fire, I’m all ears.
T L ; D R - LinkedIn is full of experts telling me how to grow the PM Squad. I’m still in startup mode, still figuring out who to trust, and still choosing the slower, scrappier path that actually feels real. It’s working… just not in the flashy, “90 days to a million” way.
