Introducing Sprints & Milestones

Today, my great friend and colleague Greg Storey and I are releasing the first episode of Sprints & Milestones, a podcast where we share war stories, tips, tactics, and anecdotes on navigating the sometimes rough waters of getting digital projects done. Needless to say, I’m thrilled to make this announcement…mostly because it’s been a long time coming!

Greg and I started planning the podcast about a year ago when I was visiting Austin. Because Greg wrote the foreword to my book, we decided that the first season should focus on the Principles for Digital Project Management, which appear in Chapter 2. While the first episode serves as an introduction to us, the topics, and the book, the following episodes will dig deeper on each principle.

Why We Did It

So, there are a bajillion podcasts out there. And I have to be honest: I don’t listen to a ton of podcasts regularly. Being a “podcaster” was never really something I had considered. But, you see, I have a really good friend who is really supportive and likes to push me professionally. That same person also happens to be someone I really enjoyed working with while I was at Happy Cog. So it made sense that, after I asked Greg to write the foreword to Project Management for Humans, that he’d push the idea further. And I couldn’t be happier with the fact that we took on this side project together and are finally releasing it.

How We Did It

Like I mentioned, Greg and I are in different locations (he’s in Texas and I’m now in New Jersey). While we may consider ourselves good at remote working, it felt like doing some work in person would benefit the outcome—and I really think it did. So, I tagged some time on to a conference trip last year, and we sat down for a couple of sessions to brainstorm and decide on structure and topics. What came out of that was a long Google doc with outlined discussion guides for each episode.

At first, we thought we’d record onsite, but there is too much fun to be had in Austin. So we scheduled some weekend time to record episodes via Skype. We shared a test recoding with some friends and got some feedback, then finalized our approach. What came out of that was 8 recorded episodes to be edited and produced by our friend Brandon at Black River Audio.

While we were pulling that together, I reached out to my friends at TeamGantt and Harvest to see if they’d be willing to sponsor the podcast. Thankfully, they both agreed—and I couldn’t be happier to have them both attached to this. Their support certainly helps!

What’s Next?

Well, first we have to see how the podcast is received. We really hope you like it and will share it with your friends and colleagues. Then, we’ll be recording a final episode of this season. The idea is to have our listeners submit ideas and answer them on the final episode.

And in the meantime, I’d love to start planning season two…and not let it take us another year to launch a second season. So, there’s a goal. Shooting for the stars!
